Stunning Second Showing for Canepa with Donington Podium
Pata Yamaha Official STK1000’s Niccoló Canepa rode his YZF-R1M to a podium-scoring position at Donington Park in the UK today on only his second FIM Superstock 1000 Cup weekend with the team. Securing a third place finish, the Italian rider rode a mature and confident race, while teammate Danny de Boer narrowly missed out on a top-ten spot to finish 11th.
Compromised by a difficult start, Canepa got into a strong rhythm early in the 15-lap race. Running fifth from the opening lap, he advanced his position within the next two revolutions as he set his sights on the podium. Consistent pace and mature riding from the 2007 STK1000 Champion saw him close on the leading group before attacking for third on lap 11, and while he continued to improve his time towards the front, Canepa ultimately chose to consolidate the position and enjoy the podium celebration rather than risking the result by pushing further. The experience and development made with the team this weekend leaves both Canepa and Pata Yamaha confident, and positively looking forward to the team’s home race at Misano in three weeks’ time.
Capitalising on his fast but progressive improvement throughout his first weekend with the Pata Yamaha crew, de Boer rode a steady race from his 14th place on the grid. A good start was impeded by a crash in front, forcing the Dutch rider to take evasive action and losing him the initial positions gained. However, regrouping quickly he returned to his rhythm making ground on the riders in front as he moved closer to the top-ten. Narrowly missing out, de Boer claimed an 11th place finish at the line and confident of more to come having learnt a lot for his opening weekend with the official team.
